Ask a question
What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry brings men together through friendship, shared traditions and a commitment to helping others. Members come from different backgrounds and meet as equals. At Lodge Thistle, that includes taking part in lodge meetings, enjoying one another's company and supporting good causes in Stewarton and across Ayrshire.

What is Lodge Thistle No. 127?

Lodge Thistle is Stewarton's Masonic lodge. We received our charter in 1771 and have been part of the town's life for more than 250 years. Today, our members continue that tradition through meetings, social events and charitable work.

Do I need to know a Freemason to join?

No. You can contact us directly, even if you have never met a Freemason. Tell us a little about yourself and what interests you, and we can arrange a chat and explain the next steps. We will make enquiries into your character, and you may be asked to provide the names of people who can vouch for you.

Can I ask questions before deciding whether to apply?

Of course. An enquiry is simply a conversation. You can ask about membership, meetings, costs or anything else you would like to understand. We would rather give you a clear picture of lodge life so you can decide whether it is right for you.

Who can enquire about membership?

Under the Grand Lodge of Scotland's membership guidance, enquiries are welcome from men aged 18 and over who believe in a Supreme Being and wish to join in good faith. Men of different faiths and backgrounds can enquire. The lodge considers membership applications through its usual process, which we will explain to you.

What happens at a lodge meeting?

Members meet to conduct lodge business and take part in Freemasonry's ceremonies and traditions. There is also an important social side: meeting friends, welcoming visitors and spending time together. Lodge Thistle normally meets on the first and third Tuesdays from September to April.

If you have never been inside a lodge, do not worry. We can walk you through what to expect before you decide whether to join.

Is Freemasonry a religion or a political organisation?

No. Freemasonry asks members to believe in a Supreme Being, but it does not tell them which faith to follow. Members have their own religious and political views. The lodge brings men together across those differences.

Is Freemasonry secret?

Freemasonry is a public organisation, and we are happy to talk about who we are, what we value and how to enquire. Some ceremonies and aspects of lodge life are kept for members, as they are part of the experience of joining. If you are unsure about anything you have heard, please ask us.

What charitable work does Lodge Thistle do?

Supporting others is an important part of lodge life. Our members have raised funds for local causes, supported community groups and contributed to charitable work across Ayrshire. You can see examples of recent activities on our news and fundraising pages.

How much time and money does membership involve?

Membership involves costs and regular meetings, but you don't need to commit to anything to make an enquiry. We can explain the current fees, meeting schedule and what members typically take part in during an informal chat.

Can women become Freemasons?

Lodge Thistle is a men's lodge under the Grand Lodge of Scotland. Other Freemasonry organisations admit women. Women are also welcome at many of the social and community events held at Lodge Thistle.

What if I am interested, but unsure whether it is for me?

That is a good reason to get in touch. You do not need to know the terminology or have a family connection to Freemasonry. Tell us what you would like to know, and we will do our best to answer openly.
